North Glengarry township opens cooling centres to help residents with extreme heat
North Glengarry township issues notice this morning to guide residents towards cooling centres should they need help dealing with the extreme heat that has struck our region.
Township-operated buildings have been opened to the general public for today and tomorrow. Locations in Alexandria include the Sandfield Centre building at Island Park, the sports dome, and the arena. In Maxville, the arena is also open for residents needing to cool down.
Township libraries are also available during regular operating hours as shown in the notice.
Meanwhile, it’s crickets as usual from South Glengarry township where residents are left to fend for themselves.
The Voyant Alert system
The Voyant Alert system has been purchased by both townships, paid for by taxpayers of course. North Glengarry appears to be making regular use of it during extreme events, while South Glengarry does not. Voyant Alert offers notices through a dedicated free app as well as via text (SMS) message.
Weather outlook
As for the weather, Environment Canada issued a heat warning on Sunday and has updated it a number of times since. The latest update, issued early this morning, notes, “Dangerous heat and humidity conditions continue.”
With the temperature in the mid 30s, the humidex values are expected to reach the mid 40s. Overnight, the temperature is forecast to stay in the 20 - 25 degree range, offering little relief.
Wednesday is predicted to be marginally better before things cool off somewhat later in the week.
Environment Canada reminds us to watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially in the elderly and other more vulnerable groups. We are also asked to avoid activities in the heat and to stay hydrated.
Here is a chart reminding us to take care of our pets during these hot and humid conditions as well. Our four-legged friends can be particularly susceptible to heat exhaustion.
Please stay cool and safe.
