North Glengarry officially declares a Significant Weather Event, crickets from South Glengarry
This morning, the Township of North Glengarry officially declared a Significant Weather Event due to the ongoing winter storm that could see up to 40 cm of blowing snow blanket the region.
The declaration was made at 11:28 a.m. “in accordance with Ontario Regulation 239/02.” The notice was issued through the Voyent/Alert system which sends emergency messages to registered users via a dedicated app, text message, and voice message. South Glengarry is also a member of the Voyent/Alert system but has yet to issue any notice.
The North Glengarry alert highlighted the “heavy snowfall, drifting snow and whiteout conditions due to high winds.”
This means it may take longer than usual to clear sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways to the Minimum Maintenance Standards. Please avoid unnecessary travel. If you must drive, please use extra caution and stay a safe distance from snowplows. Please ensure you remain parked off the road to assist with clearing efforts. Township staff are working hard to clear the roads and will notify you once the event is over. Stay safe!

If you have not yet registered on the Voyent/Alert system to receive notices, you can find details on the North Glengarry website here.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada has continued its Winter Storm Warning for our region, declaring a “highly impactful winter storm today” with “peak snowfall rates of 3 to 5 cm per hour.” Wind gusts are forecast to reach 70 km/h. The warning adds that “travel will be hazardous and is not recommended.”
Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and have an emergency kit which includes drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to getprepared.gc.ca.
