It’s Glengarry Highland Games weekend!
Folks, it’s here: Glengarry’s biggest annual party that celebrates all things Scottish. The Glengarry Highland Games kicks off today in Maxville, as the fairgrounds are taken over by the sounds of bagpipes, canons, drums, and athletes.
Friday is typically less well attended, this affording people a closer look at the action. The heavyweights sports competitions, that include such things as the hammer throw and the caber toss, take place in front of the grandstand, on the infield. Other events are scattered around the grounds, along with various food, drink, and heritage item vendors.
The Glengarry Highland Games are licensed for those who need some extra stimulation, though the grounds and events are all family friendly.
I have to admit that my favourite activities to watch are the Scottish heavyweight competitions. I marvel at how these athletes can hurl the various implements so high and far. There are competition categories for amateur men, professional women, and masters men — all of which go on Friday. On Saturday, the professional men and teen athletes see action.
Saturday also includes competitions for children, such as the kids heavyweights which features scaled down implements an activities.
Here’s one of the action photos I shot over my many years attending the Games.
